The inside of the mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin known as mucosa that is smooth and pink. An alteration of its appearance could be a warning sign for a pathological process, the most serious being oral cancer. The following can be signs at the beginning of a pathological process.

Any of these changes could be detected to the lips, cheeks, gum tissue, tongue, palate, face or neck. You will not always experience pain or discomfort with these conditions. Additionally, if you have facial and/or oral pain without any of the above conditions or for no obvious cause or reason, this too should be brought to the attention of your dentist or Dr. Sowden.

We recommend that you perform a monthly oral cancer self-examination. Note that your mouth is one of your body's most important warning systems. Do not ignore any suspicious lumps or sores.

Other forms of pathology can exist below the gum surface which can only be evaluated by x-rays. Routine visits to your dentist may reveal these issues. Referral to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is paramount for appropriate treatment. Usually, a simple biopsy procedure performed by Dr. Sowden can determine whether your condition is benign in nature or requires further intervention.
