AFTER A BIOPSY PROCEDURE
After an incisional or excisional biopsy is performed, the tissue and/or bone is forwarded to the UBC Department of Pathology for analysis and diagnosis.
BLEEDING
- Minimal bleeding or oozing may occur and if needed a damp sterile piece of gauze directly on the wound can be used.
SWELLING
- Some moderate swelling may occur several hours after surgery, reaching a maximum in three days.
PAIN
- You may be prescribed a pain medication which can be taken as needed. Often Advil/Motrin (Ibuprofen), if tolerated, is sufficient for post operative discomfort.
DIET
- Soft, cool foods and liquids may be easier to eat otherwise, diet as tolerated.
- Avoid hot fluids and the use of a drinking straw for one week.
SUTURES
- Resorbable stitches are usually used and will dissolve on their own. If another type of suture is used, you will be informed and a follow up appointment made for removal of your stitches.
ORAL HYGIENE
- A mouth rinse will likely be prescribed and to be used for 10 days post -operatively or as instructed.
- You may brush your teeth the evening of your surgery, but avoid the wound.
FOLLOW UP
- If required, a follow up appointment will be made. We will advise you of your pathology results once received. Note that it usually takes 2 weeks to receive this report.
